Montenegro in Seven Days: From Ancient Forests to Island Sanctuaries
After two weeks on the road in Serbia, from the energy of Belgrade to the pine-scented calm of Zlatibor, we crossed the border into Montenegro by car. The landscape changed instantly. The mountains grew steeper, the air cooler, and then, all at once, wilder.
We had a full week. We wanted it all: nature, history, sea, and above all, stillness. Montenegro gave us more than we expected.

THE WILD HEART
The Wild Heart - Kolašin, Bjelasica and Biogradska Gora
We started inland, in the north. Our base was Kolašin, the alpine town at the foot of Bjelasica Mountain. In summer, Bjelasica is all green katuns, wild blueberries and shepherd trails. We hiked in the morning light with barely another soul in sight.
The highlight was Biogradska Gora National Park. Biograd Lake is one of the last three primeval rainforests in Europe, and you feel it the moment you step onto the trail around the lake. Three-hundred-year-old trees, glass-still water reflecting the peaks, absolute silence. It is not luxury in the traditional sense. It is something rarer.
Nearby, Skadar Lake offered a different kind of wild. We took a private boat, gliding past water lilies and pelicans with the mountains of Albania in the distance. A glass of local Vranac on board, and time seemed to stop.
HISTORY REIMAGINED
Mamula Island by Banyan Tree - History Reimagined
From the mountains, we drove to the coast. But not to just any hotel.
A private boat from the marina took us to Mamula Island. The 19th-century fortress, once a prison, has been transformed by Banyan Tree into one of the most extraordinary hotels in the Adriatic.
Our suite was carved into stone walls three meters thick, with minimalist Asian-inspired interiors, and total privacy. Days were spent between the infinity pool, the spa in the former gunpowder rooms, and dinners of Adriatic seafood as the sun set behind the Bay of Kotor.
Mamula is not just a stay. It is a destination in itself. Intimate, cinematic, and utterly unforgettable.
We explored from there: the chic marina of Portonovi for lunch, and a slow cruise into the Bay of Kotor as the cliffs closed in around us.
PERAST & THE BAY OF KOTOR
Perast and the Bay - Santa Boka
For our final chapter, we moved to Perast, the most beautiful village in the Bay. Baroque palaces, no cars, just stone and sea.
We checked into the Santa Boka Hotel, right on the waterfront - directly onto the Bay of Kotor, with the twin islands in front of us. Waking up to that view, with coffee and the church bells of St. Nicholas, was pure magic.
From Perast, we took a traditional wooden boat to Our Lady of the Rocks. The legend of the sailors who built the island stone by stone over centuries is still alive in the tiny church, filled with silver votives and 68 frescoes by Tripo Kokolja.
We spent our last day lost in Kotor itself. Climbing the 1,350 steps to the fortress of St. John at sunrise, wandering the medieval lanes, and finishing with a farewell dinner on the water.Montenegro, RememberedSeven days, two worlds. If I had to choose two moments that will stay with me forever,
they both happened at sunrise and sunset.
The first was my sunrise swim at Mamula Island. The Adriatic was glass, the old fortress still asleep above me, and for a few minutes I had the entire sea to myself. Pure, silent, golden bliss.
The second was in Perast, tasting oysters pulled straight from the bay just minutes before. Briny, fresh, with a squeeze of lemon and a view of Our Lady of the Rocks. No restaurant in the world could replicate that simplicity.
Montenegro is made of moments like these. Intimate, unrepeatable, and utterly its own.
