Our team just returned from two weeks on the road - from Belgrade to Novi Sad, through the heart of Šumadija in Topola, up into Zlatibor and deep into Tara National Park. Serbia surprised us at every turn, and it is ready for luxury travelers who want Europe without the crowds.
Serbia is not one thing. It's a confluence - just like the Sava and Danube. Ski resorts and national parks, antique monasteries with 800-year-old frescoes, a rising wine region, and a food scene that moves seamlessly from cozy kafana to Michelin-level tasting menus.
We did the driving, the tasting, the hotel checks and the hidden-gate monastery visits so you don't have to. See it through our eyes: We documented everything - from sunrise over Kalemegdan to wine cellars in Fruška Gora and the fog over Tara.

BELGRADE
Where the Sava Meets the Danube
We started at the confluence - that powerful point where two great rivers become one at Kalemegdan Fortress. Belgrade is elegant, energetic, and deeply historic.
Private tour of Kalemegdan and Skadarlija, the bohemian quarter; Tesla Museum; sunset boat cruise at the confluence; Temple of Saint Sava, one of the largest Orthodox churches in the world. Where we stayed: The St. Regis Belgrade - for absolute five-star glamour on the waterfront, and Saint Ten Hotel - our favorite boutique hideaway with impeccable design. Eat: From kafana tradition to modern Serbian fine dining.
NOVI SAD & FRšKA GORA
Monasteries and Wine Country
An hour north, a different world. Novi Sad is relaxed, Austro-Hungarian, European Capital of Culture, dominated by the mighty Petrovaradin Fortress.
Petrovaradin Fortress with views over the Danube; Fruška Gora National Park - the oldest national park in Serbia with 16 antique Orthodox monasteries hidden in the forest (we loved Krušedol and Grgeteg); and the wine region itself - Bermet, Grašac and international varietals in family wineries like Deurić and Erdevik.
TOPOLA & OPLENAC
The Royal Heart
In the center of Šumadija, Topola is the story of Serbia. This is the wine region of kings. Oplenac Royal Mausoleum with its breathtaking mosaics made of 40 million pieces; Karađorđe's Museum; and Aleksandrović and Arsenijević wineries - Serbia's best reds.
This is where history, wine, and orthodox heritage meet.
ZLATIBOR & TARA NATIONAL PARK
Nature at its Most Dramatic. The west is pure nature.
In Zlatibor - A year-round mountain resort. In winter it's Serbia's premier ski resort with perfectly groomed slopes, in summer, endless meadows, hiking and air that smells like pine. We stayed at Bor Hotel by Karisma - modern mountain luxury with a world-class spa after a day outdoors.
Tara National Park - This was the highlight. One of Europe's last truly wild parks. Ancient forests, the Drina River Canyon, viewpoints like Banjska Stena looking straight into Bosnia, wild bears and the endemic Pančić spruce that exists nowhere else. We cruised the Drina, hiked to Orthodox monasteries Rača and Mileševa, and had lunch in local ethno-villages where everything is from the garden.
Serbia completely stole my heart
From royal nights at Belgrade's White Palace hosted by His and Her Royal Highness, to the Nikola Tesla Museum's UNESCO-protected archive and the jaw-dropping Temple of Saint Sava, one of the largest Orthodox churches in the world.
We checked in at the brand-new St. Regis Belgrade overlooking the Sava River, toured the city in vintage Yugo cars, dined at my favorite kafana Suvobor, and enjoyed a private Serbian heritage evening at the historic Kolarac concert hall.
Then out into the countryside: the royal Oplenac complex in Topola, lunch in the so-called Serbian Tuscany, and north into Vojvodina for wine tasting at Vinarija La Gora, plus Novi Sad and charming Sremski Karlovci.
The wild side blew me away — the unspoiled wilderness of Tara National Park with a sunset dinner in the mountains, Zlatibor's Gostilje Waterfall, a Serbian trout feast at Kafana Pecinar in Ljubiš, the depths of Stopica Cave, the dramatic Uvac Canyon, the rebel capital of Užice, and the 13th-century Mileševa Monastery.
